For now, I just want to say congratulations to our new City of Kingston Mayor, Shayne Gallo - and say thank you to all of those who have served and have recently been elected to serve.

Tree of Darkness... Tree of Light... Tree of Life... October 2011

It has been a while since I wrote anything here. Since then, in part due to corporate and politcal greed and unethical behaviors (my opinion) - along with some assistance from Hurricane Irene - many a life and home has been wrecked. A fragile infrastructure has been given one, two, three or more new whacks. The economy has continued to shake the change (if we have any) out of our pockets. And many of us have been left with some serious concerns about our future; the future of our children; the future of our grandchildren...

The political climate is currently charged up like the "engergizer bunny" on methamphetamines. Some of our banks (or, at least the Bank of America...) are being picketed and boycotted. Wall street is under a peaceful seige (that sometimes involves not-so-peaceful interactions with the authorities) by a number of like-minded citizen and union protesters...

And the rain just keeps falling and falling and falling...

I will edit these four recent posts (as needed) over the next few days. For now though, I just wanted a collective place to post my more recent pics - and get this "show" (my blog) on the road again!

I attended a Metro-Community Party today and hope to add some pics [I did not take these ones; so permissions are hopefully pending] from that.

I also need to update the links in the sidebar; so for now, if you utilize them, please note that they might be out of date.

How Did You... How Do You... Fail Us?

I guess it is pretty ironic that someone that has been such a disaster as a parent would even begin to address issues having to do with preventing teen pregnancy; preventing / addressing addiction problems early on; the prevention of youth violence and such - but it is that very fact (my admitted failure as a parent) - that inspires me (my children are now grown, with children of thier own) to try.

See, generational poverty; generational neglect; generational psychological, emotional, mental, verbal, physical and sexual abuse - with these traumas having been compounded, far too often, by perpetrators from outside the family that have likewise preyed on our psyches, minds and/or bodies - have had thier way with many of the individuals in my family; and I am one of few people - from my generation - that is willing or able to talk about it.

Is there a caste system in America? Are there - as in India - "untouchables" - in America? If not, how do children like me; my brothers; my sisters; my cousins; my children (as children) fall through crack after crack after crack after crack in a system that is supposed to make sure children are safe and provided for?

How did it come to be that my "step-mother" (one of a few / unofficial cohabitations...) died traumatically - out in the woods - with barely a squeak in the (other than local and perhaps slanted) press? How did my half-sister (at around the age of 5 months) die of exposure and starvation with barely a squeak (comparitive to what "does" make the news...) in the (other than the local and perhaps slanted...) press?

How did men that battered and terrorized woman after woman after woman... child after child after child... spend barely any time - if any time at all - in jail for those particular reasons? Why has woman after woman after woman in my family been diagnosed with this or that or the other thing - and - all too often - been revictimized by the psychiatric field - the medical field - the pharmaceutical industry - and even employers?

Why did accused sex offenders - sometimes allegedly having preyed upon child after child after child in my family - never have to face a jury for these alleged [1+1+1+1+1+1+..............] offenses? Most of them (these "alleged" perps) going on (at this point) to a natural death - with thier victims showing up to listen to the whitewash and outright lies told at thier (yep; I have to use the word "alleged") perpetrators funerals?

Why did the schools - the teachers / employees at the schools (speaking of my generation) - not notice and/or not report the frequent absences? All of the homework that was not turned in? That sometimes report cards were being signed by the children themselves? The fact that a child obviously hadn't been to a doctor; hadn't had a bath or a shower...; hadn't had thier teeth brushed (or been to a dentist); hadn't had thier hair shampooed and brushed (in how long?) - thier clothes washed - etc?

Why did the schools - the teachers / employees at the schools (speaking of my childrens experiences) not notice or report some of the (poverty, trauma and addiction having thier way...) "same?" Or report this sort of thing - to no avail - because the end result of that reporting was further abuse by the system and/or perpetrators within the system?

What purpose does "out of school" suspension serve in a family riddled with obvious problems? What purpose does Family Court serve when they send a child from a family riddled with obvious problems to an institution that has perpetrators of mental, emotional, physical and/or sexual abuse on the (all too frequent, my dear "friends") staff.

What purpose does a police officer serve when all he or she knows is to slap the cuffs on one of these kids - throw them in one of the institutions noted above - throw them in jail (where more perpetrators lurk) or shoot them?

What were our inherent rights?

What are our inherent rights now?

Why did the local paper refuse to print my story - or even discuss printing my story (this, in the early 1980s) - of the ritualistic, cultic, psychological, mental, physical and sexual abuse of a number of children / youths in the City of Kingston? Why? Wouldn't the public want to know? Wouldn't they WANT the public to know so that the public could protect other children??? Why? When some of the facts had already been printed. When all of this (what I had to say) was backed up by a variety of people and a variety of documents that went through Family Court and/or Criminal Court - ending up with the conviction (after one police officer had even refused to investigate...) of one (probably of a few...) perpetrator?

Why did the parole board let that perp out of prison and allow him (after he had stalked us for years prior...) to move up the road from us?

Why did the Family Court, in another case I'm aware of, put an "in house 'order of protection'" against a man that had allegedly sexually abused a very young child? Why did the lawyer that I paid $2,500.00 to - for representation of the child in that case - take the case to the wrong court [Family court versus Criminal Court] - with the case being thrown out as a result and no return on the money...........................????????????

Yep.

Why did they scare that little child so bad that she wouldn't say a peep in court? How could she say a peep when she had been sent back to LIVE WITH HER ALLEGED ABUSER?

Yep. I'm a "bad parent." My son, the child's father, broke that assholes jaw - and I was happy about it.
"Shame" [yep folks, my son got arrested and paid the price plus "applejacks..."] "on" (excuse my sarcasm) "me."

I could go on and on; but consider this part one...

And tell me:

Does it make you happy to read about a woman that was terrorized by men her entire life; abused by men her entire life; scared to look, see, speak, breathe...

Admit that she failed as a parent?

Fine.

Of the two serious Democratic candidates for City of Kingston Mayor, Shayne Gallo and Hayes Clement, I have sided with Mr. Gallo due to his roots here, his knowlege of the area, his working relationship with the unions and working-class people, the message he has consistantly put out and the persona of kindness (I think that is the best way to put it) that surrounds him.

I have nothing personal against Mr. Clement. In fact, I do not know Mr. Clement at all.

I do take issue with what I perceive (my blog; my impressions...) as Mr. Clement's arrogant stance; and I "was" upset this week by a little blip I caught in this weeks "Kingston Times" - a paper I generally have tremendous respect for.

I quote (from Hugh Reynolds Article; "Andi Rules"; "Kingston Times"; 6/9/11; bottom of page 26 and top of page 27]:

"Here's a vignette [My words inside brackets...] that may say something about Clement's style. After the Democratic convention, Gallo, festering [Fact or perception?] over Clement's overwhelming win [Democratic endorsement...], indicated [To whom?] he might not be joining fellow Democrats at a post-convention party... [which Mr. Gallo apparently did attend]...

"Gallo, Gartenstein and [another person] took a booth at the restaurant away from the crowd and ordered drinks...

'These drinks are on Mr. Clement", the waiter advised, as Gallo reached for his wallet."

I am one of the people that attended Civil Right's Attorney Sussman's open meeting a while back, where "entrenched" (so to speak) families were criticized (by some) and "new blood" (so to speak) was hailed(by some) as the answer to Kingston's problems.

I took this into consideration - and it probably does apply (I really do not know.) in some cases.

However, I can tell you that my husband, who grew up here in the City of Kingston, knows the streets of this City inside and out; knows the history of this City inside and out; and knows the personalities and issues associated with this City inside and out - in a way that I (having moved here about 20 years ago) probably couldn't begin to assimilate [I have been focusing on just getting to know my Ward and Legislative District] - in total - EVER.

So, for sure, there "are" benefits (for everyone) to having a "home-grown" Mayoral Candidate that is able to tell you (physically and metaphorically) how to get there ["Bottoms up!"] from here.

There are some funky internet problems going on at the moment... including ads where they shouldn't be and spam sneaking through the filters. I just removed the KingstonCitizens.org link (Heads up Rebecca... Ward 5) from my blog link list (I hope this is temporary.) because there was some innappropriate (my opinion) stuff coming through [I also had this come through on my email].

Furthermore, just so ya' know, I did not download the advertisement that keeps coming through on my music link - nor do I approve it. I just haven't figured out - yet - how to get rid of it.

That said, I'm having to take it easy due to some medical issues right now - so maybe I'll have a new posting up in a little while.

To the best of my comprehension, there were no endorsements, as of yet, from the Democratic Committee - in regards to the Ward 1 Alderman position or the Ward 7 Alderman position.

Democratic endorsements for Wards 2, 3, 4 and 8 all involve folks that are currently serving in those positions:

Alderman Thomas Hoffay: Ward 2

Alderman Charles Landi: Ward 3

Alderman Shirley Whitlock: Ward 4

Alderman Robert (Bob) Senor: Ward 8 [I was not able to get a close photo in this case.]

The Democratic Committee (correction made) endorsement for U.C. Legislative District 6 (Wards 1, 2 and 4) was Peter Loughran.

The Democratic Committee endorsement (correction made) for U.C. Legislative District 7 was Jeanette Provenzano.

The Other Democratic Candidate for Mayor (Shayne Gallo) has not received the Democratic Committee Endorsement; but he did receive the Working Family Party (WFP) endorsement.

The Other Democratic Candidate for U.C. Legislature (District 5; Wards 3, 5 and 9) [Michael Madsen] has not received the Democratic Committee Endorsement; but he did receive the WFP endorsement.

Leonard Walker was also seeking the Democratic endorsement for U.C. Legislature (District 5; Wards 3, 5 and 9) - but was unsuccessful.

"Wallmart" (without some policy changes to protect thier workers) - which I believe has to be looked at separately (Could Wallmart workers be unionized?) from the issue of support of "small businesses" (These need, in my opinion, all the support we can give them!)

*** To grant Mr. Gallo and the other candidates thier due on the Wallmart issue, this question was (in my opinion) inserted in the WFP leaflet [see the reference below...] in a rather tricky way...

[As in, do you support "Wallmart & Small Business"? (Is this not an oxymoron?)]?

(a): "Speculation Tax" [I do not totally understand this, even after looking it up - so input would be appreciated!]

In closing, I would like to state that being able to attend this type of meeting as an "outsider" (so to speak) - with no entry fee required (a big deal for some of us!) - was very much appreciated. I would hope that the WFP would continue to host such forums and put an invite out to the entire City of Kingston Community [same conditions] with the Democratic Party and Republican Party [at minimum (what I meant by this, is any active political parties in town, but especially the more prominent ones...] following suit.

Personal Note... PTSD.... Music Videos...

Just so you know, if you don't already, this will never be a strictly political or community-based blog. I suffer from PTSD and periodically go through what I will term "meltdowns"... Thus, I utilize this blog to convey many different things.

Right now I am having a tough time; but I'm still going to try and show up and cover some events that I have at least tentatively committed to. Other than that, it has to be "take care of me" time - or I risk unraveling further.

I know I look "normal" (except sometimes, lol, when I sing karaoke) --- but what the H is "normal" anyhow?

Do I look like a woman that had three children by the age of 19? Do I look like a woman that lived in a tent for a while with three children? Do I look like a woman that almost drank herself to death and contemplated suicide many, many, many times over?

I have been all of that and more - and like the woman in the video below, I later developed an addiction to perfection (impossible from the get go), education, information gathering and (to the best of my ability) activism.

Right now I am flooded by triggers. It happens. It sucks. It (so far, anyhow) passes...

But I will take this opportunity, like the lady in the video below, to say we need more quality resources to deal with PTSD - as it stems from many different (I am someone that suffered multiple truamas over the course of my life) factors.

I am not familiar with the book that is advertised in the video below, so please do not take that video as a book recommendation. I will, when I can, check it out - and maybe do a bit of a review from another PTSD victim/survivors perspective.

I have decided to step away from the videos I took (though a valuable baseboard) at Civil Right's Attorney Sussman's open meeting, and simply put forth my own impressions from what (overall) was said. This is partly due to time and health constraints; and partly due to my commitment to creating (or trying to...) harmony (versus discord).

Strong opinions on some topics were stated and okayed for the camera, which I'm sure some reporters (I'm just a blogger and proud to be...) would jump on. However, as I've stated previously (on this blog) - it is my belief that the bottom line issue, in regard to Civil Rights violations here, there and everywhere, is socioeconomic inequality (classism) and the neglect, exploitation and abuse of those that fall within the lower socioeconmic groups. An issue (manifested in many ways; some of which were addressed at the meeting) that reaches across the sexes, the races, the different social, ethnic and religious groups, the non-religious, and the ages.

A long time ago, I approached the City of Kingston Common Council with information (passed out copies) on Oscar Lewis' "Culture of Poverty" study (1966; "Scientific American"). I recommend that article again now - because there is some vital information in it for all of the people and agencies that exist (are sometimes struggling with all they have...) in this city.

It was a general concensus at the meeting Attorney Sussman hosted that the Midtown Area of Kingston has been neglected and mis-handled. I agree, wholeheartedly with that.

In fact, if the mid-city area of Kingston is in the process of being designated a minority-area, I would have to ask why this area has not been the recipient of more help and funding versus (as it appears...) less?

A lot has "gone down" in the City of Kingston that is good.

A lot has "gone down" in the City of Kingston that is (my opinion) discriminatory and exclusive - pushing far too many to the fringes of existance - ignoring thier needs - and/or meeting these needs in ways that are counter-productive. For example, you cannot send someone for alcohol or drug rehabilitation and then send them to live in a drug/crack infested rooming house and expect positive (although a few will squeeze through) results...

And, in regard to the "street crime"?

What do you expect?

Children cannot be neglected, abused, terrorized on the streets or medicated into good behavior. They need safe homes. They need safe schools. They need "safe streets". They need political representatives that put them (the welfare of "our" children) - FIRST!

I heard at the meeting that there is (if any...; corrections, if out there, welcomed!) only one African American on the City of Kingston Police Force.
This should be remedied ASAP.

I heard that there is no longer an NAACP group in the City of Kingston - and I believe this should be remedied ASAP.

I also believe an organization strictly based on the advocacy and empowerment for women and children (to interact with other empowerment groups) is very much called for in this City!

I heard more about the recent sexual harrassment case the situation with the County Jail, and some other issues... and I would advise folks to "clean up thier acts" along with the streets...

Whilst taking a look at how current programs, from religious not-for-profits (are we overwhelmed with these?) to for-profit businesses (there don't appear to be many!) are operating and interacting with the community.

Tourism was brought up as a potential plus plus for the City of Kingston... but that won't happen unless some serious work - that we can visually SEE (and not just on the computer) occurs. Would more quality Bed and Breakfast establishments embellish this possibility? I think. [The key word being "quality."] Are aspiring new businesses facing roadbock after roadblock? So it would appear.

So - how do we simplify and keep high standards? Isn't "that" an issue (Shouldn't bringing in jobs be a priority?) to look at - along with debates about yard sale signs, cat issues and some other items that (I have to agree with a video I saw recently) appear relatively trivial in comparison.

Another issue, big in my book...

Should there be cross-representation - by one person (whomever that person might be) on any of the boards / commissions in the City of Kingston? If someone is on this board and that board and another board (etc), isn't that person being given too much (potential) power in a community that has a broad range of people to select our representatives and leaders from?

And what about the profit v not-for-profit issue? Do we want to live in a City that is based on County Jobs (I am not against these...) and the exploitation (my word; my blog; my opinion) of the less fortunate? [Some of whom certainly play thier part in the a cycle that needs to be looked at from all angles!).

Could some of what is now deemed volunteer work be transformed into paid positions?

And what about the Kingston Area Public Access (KAPA) issue... Doesn't "that" (This was brought up...) deserve some serious scruitiny?

Some folks / groups were given "Kudos" for thier work on behalf of the City of Kingston. Why though, I wonder, do these groups never come together for one common purpose? Why is there an "us against them" mentality? Who IS (this came up, big time) focusing on job creation in the City of Kingston? Why are there so many (reported by others and personally experienced) roadblocks to business creation [not to mention the taxation issue...]?

After all is said and done, and my concerns about writing this in a way that is as non-offensive (but still confrontational...) as possible --- it turns out I am almost freewriting...

And I AM leaving out the most personalized issues brought up - whilst encouraging Attorney Sussman (yes, indeed) to investigate (if this is his intent) these issues (some with names attached) to the fullest.

A LOT was discussed at Attorney Sussman's meeting - and I may choose to return to the topic in the near future. For now, I'm going to leave this topic - with a note that further meetings are reputedly on Attorney Sussman's agenda and anyone / everyone is encouraged to attend / give thier own imput.

I have heard back from Attorney Sussman already - with more (He is working on his own overview of the meeting) pending. I also received the following information (on "PULSES") via email; and I will pass that information along to you here / now (Thank You Kathy!):

"PULSES is a group of over 400 members - including parents of special education students, attorneys, and service providers mostly in Orange County but also in Dutchess, Rockland, Westchester, and Ulster Counties. We currently have a subgroup in Ellenville which is very active and just hosted a special meeting last month. I have a few members from Kingston and am definitely looking to add more to the e-mail group. If you know of any interested parents of special education students, please send me their e-mail addresses and I will add then to the group.

I have an inquiry in to Annmarie Claus as to when the next rally for the "Golden Hill Nursing Home" [Keeping It County Run / Making Needed Renovations] will be held. When I have that information I will pass it on to you, along with a way that you can contact your County Legislatures on the matter. In the meantime, that is (here) "on hold" - as I feel it is important to cover the meeting that Attorney Sussman hosted (the papers did not cover this) as soon as I can get all of those materials (from videos I took; research I've done; etc) together.

For now, I want to state that Attorney Michael Sussman checks out - via an internet search - just fine. He is who he says he is - and he appears to have the best interests of Kingston - in particular Mid-Town Kingston (the area of greatest need) - at heart.

I have not been able to upload the videos I took at the meeting (probably just as well) to You Tube; so I am screening them and taking notes on what I deem to be most pertinent. Others that attended the meeting (Robert Smith, Jeannie Edwards, Ismail Shabaz (sp?) and a few other folks) are welcome to chime in; but I'm going to keep the ultimate write-up as issue-centered (versus people/personality-centered) as I can.

One thing that I can pass on - at this moment in time - is a link to "PULSES" ("Parents United Learning the Special Education System"). Attorney Sussman was accompanied by the founder of "same" - and a sheet / link to this organization was provided.

Is this ["PULSES"] organization going to be available to City of Kingston / Ulster County residents? I am not sure (I will fly an email...); but one would guess maybe. And if "PULSES" is a tool of empowerment (it sounds like it is) for these youth and their families - I say "Kudos!" [Wish you were here years ago.........]

Other than that - for now - if anyone cares to make a list or add to a list of community activist organizations that are currently active in the City of Kingston (some are listed in the sidebar >) - "that" would be much appreciated. Along with a list of businesses - in the City limits - that employ a significant number of people.

Some of these (in both cases) were mentioned at the meeting; others were not. Any assistance here, to develop the most comprehensive outline possible - would be appreciated.

How well do the folks in this community think issues such as sexism, racism, elitism, economic inequality, education, classism and other basic Civil Rights issues are being handled? I was shocked by some of what I heard at the meeting; but heartened by a few others.

So... with a lot more pending... I will leave it there for now [my ulcers are eating my ulcers]... with a reminder that your thoughts and opinions are always welcome here [as long as they are appropriate / non-abusive] as well!

City of Kingston City Council Meeting Citizen Notes On Open Speaking Session Issues

At tonight's City of Kingston City Council Meeting (Open Speaker Session), UC Legislature, Jeanette Provezano spoke on behalf of keeping the Ulster County Health Center in County (versus making a transition to private) hands. Two employees of the facility also spoke (in a similar manner) on this topic - and a very good case was built (in my opinion) for doing so.

Also discussed were issues of public safety (blocked roadways) / children on bikes with no helmets - and the registration / regulations / fees / etc. for lawn and/or garage sales.

A possible bike helmet collection and give-away is reputedly in the works.

The garage sale issue [John Burridge showed up with a petition with 511 signatures against limiting / regulating and/or charging a fee for garage / lawn sales) - and this issue seems to have been dropped (?) for the time being.

We did not stay for the rest of the City Council meeting; but what we saw / heard "was" interesting; and I wish more people would (when they can) attend.

I've been needing to do some writing for a while - but can't find the time or the willingness to probe the darkness that is (for my topic) required. Thus, I put up the following videos, which I urge you to view at your own discretion. I do not know if factnet is a viable source anymore or not. Some cult awareness resources do get infiltrated and/or bought out by cults - and I haven't done that type of research (am not up to date) in quite some time.

Why did I pick these particular videos?

1. I've always had some degree of difficulty seeing where the line gets drawn between "cults" (per se) and "gangs".

2. Most youth and other folks that get involved in cults and/or gangs (based on the research I have done) have - even before getting involved in "same" - a history of family dysfunction and/or trauma.

3. I believe that prevention is KEY - but since we are "so far gone" in "so many ways" - bringing in some professionals (in the area of PTSD / Dissociative Disorders) that know how to deal with dysfunctional family systems, cults and gangs should be a high priority at every level (local to national) of society.

4. Just my opinion... but I see a lot of "the blind leading the blind" around here - and we are going to have to do better than that if we want to find our way up and out of the mess we are in.

Commentary: As a former teen parent that worked in teen pregnancy prevention services, I made approximately $30,000 a year. Is there a benefit to having a former teen parent speak out on teen pregnancy prevention. Absolutely. It is tough! But is it tough when you have megabucks coming your way? Follow-up on the YWCA V Current Everette Hodge Center (Funding, programs and oversight of same) Issue:

In the post below there is a video of a recent public hearing on this issue; as well as pertinent links regarding the debate.

I have simply been following the story, providing updates when available - and asking (via FB) some questions pertaining to the issue.

Apparently the City of Kingston currently owns the building; but programs run out of the building are funded via a "Community Development Block Grant" (CDBG) or grants (?); the YWCA idea has been in the works for a while now; and the community is at odds over this potential transition.

I think that is to be expected, as a lot of time and energy has gone into making the Everette Hodge community friendly. However, I also know that the YWCA is a class act - and this expansion would likely serve the same community (although the transition would likely be difficult) just as well.

I am always baffled, though, as to why some kind of compromise between groups such as these can not be reached (?)

Would the YWCA's grant cover hiring one or more new employees to work at the Everette Hodge? Might one or more of the people currently working at the Hodge be kept on?

One plus I see (or think I see) to the YWCA taking over, is that there would probably (?) be one Executive Director overseeing both the current YWCA facility and the Everette Hodge facility - which would cut costs (I believe; I could be wrong) from the get-go...

I am one of the folks that has felt uncomfortable when I've attended groups (one group actually; geared towards addressing community violence) at the Everette Hodge Center - and I know a couple of other people have felt (unwelcome?) the same.

So, whatever the outcome of this, I hope the new "hosts" will make sure that meetings are handled in an inclusive non-dominant democratic manner - with an official accounting - available to all - of what traspired.

An idealist - I would like to see the best of the YW blend with the best of the Everette Hodge. Is this possible by some means? I don't know. I have been told that the CDBG can only go to one party for the Hodge oversight; so...

What say you?

As far as the potential sale of the Hodge (City owned) to a Not-for-Profit organization...

Who might want to buy?

That seems to be a pertinent question, as some other groups might want to toss their hat into that ring as well...

Whatever the case, I surely hope the Everette Hodge Center is able to keep serving the community through this coming Summer; because times are - beyond a shadow of a doubt - real tough.

I'm hearing and reading (FB) a lot of things I do not like - and I surely hope the youth, parents, guardians, teachers and other staff members are addressing the issues versus brushing them off.

All the anti-bullying videos are nice; but parents, guardians and those within the system have to be willing to implement the prevention and intervention (solution oriented) materials that they hear and see - or it will not [I have reason for serious concerns; and may well post some of those here (permission required) at a later date] get better.

"Dear Editor:

Regarding your front-page story ( March 13, “YWCA wants to run programs at Hodge Center,” http://ow.ly/4nCFJ ), this is one of the best ideas I have heard in years!

I know that Sandy Thompson-Hopgood has struggled with what to do and how to develop the Hodge into a vital asset for the community. She is a good person with a big heart and means well, but to no avail; unfortunately it has turned out to be a federally funded baby-sitting service for families who can not afford proper child care.

Sometimes it has movies, sometimes social events, sometimes it offers food to children. As Frank Nazzaro points out, it offers computer education but on computers so old and outdated that any child learning on them would be lost and considered obsolete if they were to go out into the real work force today.

Since I moved here in 2005, I have never been able to get a schedule of classes or programs offered at the Hodge Center. In fact, I do not even see upcoming events listed in any of our local papers or in our Main Street Manager’s weekly newsletters.

Rumors have spread that funds intended for programs at the Hodge Center awarded from the community development grants and local citizens writing checks to the Food for Thought initiative are being siphoned off into other people’s special interest programs, instead of helping the children It would behoove the mayor to order an audit of the Hodge Center’s financial records for the past five yeas and put an end to these rumors.

Transparency is the key to deciding if these accusations against the Hodge Center are truth or mere fiction; the public has the right to know where its money is really going and what it is or isn’t really funding.

I know people who have personally gone to the center in the past to offer free lessons or classes for children only to be turned away with no apparent reason, I have talked with several community leaders who have tried to help guide the Hodge Center into the right direction with little or no success, with issues of two many chiefs, large personalities, and tightly controlled and protected by political favoritism.

The mayor and I have disagreed about many things over the years, but if he really wants to do what is best for the children of Midtown, he and the Common Council will approve the Y’s request and merge these two non-profits to benefit the entire community.

The YWCA has a great track record over the years. It has structure and name recognition. It has a printed schedule of weekly events and programs as well as a professionally trained staff and avid volunteers.

Nazzaro (an assistant at the Hodge Center) is quoted saying that “the community is pleased with the overall performance of the Hodge Center,” My friends and neighbors who live in the area feel quite the opposite about the performance or lack there of to date.

I know that our Alderman Shirley Whitlock, D-Ward 4, is very close to the main players who run the Hodge and its programs. But being a elected official she has to break personal ties and do what’s right for the community and her ward as a whole.

I hope that the mayor and the Common Council will do the right thing and follow through post-haste and not delay approving this win-win proposition for our children, the Hodge Center, the YWCA and the community.

I recently asked a Republican candidate ["Beautiful day to...; https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=1632697893096&id=1106100766&ref=notif&notif_t=feed_comment_reply] for Mayor (this accounting is close, but not exact) how she could justify being a member of the GOP, when so many members of the GOP have been taking whacks at Womens Rights - and would apparently - if they got thier way - take away (over the course of time) the very platform that she stands upon...

As it is apparent, to me, that a significant number of Republicans, particularly Conservative Right Wing Republicans, would like to see women "barefoot and pregnant" and delegated to a life of dependence, poverty and servitude [certainly not to a Mayoral office (or only as a token...)]

This exchange occurred on FB, where my question dissappeared; reappeared; got some responses from others; and dissappeared again (as far as I can tell) --- with no response [as of yet...; it has just reappeared again...] from the party to whom the question was posed.

As stated during the dialogue, I "do" believe the question was (and is) sincere and valid - and I happen to like (overall impression) and respect (in other areas) the woman / candidate (allied, I believe, with the wrong political party, considering the Women's Rights and child welfare issues) in question.
