May I suggest a book called Power vs Force which despite the sound of the title, is very philosophic about the same issue the computer man is addressing. It challenges the person to reach beyond cause and effect as well as the Newtonian Rational Intellect to new and more enlightened levels of consciousness.
Might be worth a look see to an open and inquisitive mind. Thought I'd pass this on to you here, since I don't see you around much...smitty

smitty,

This actually brought to mind, for me, the old nature (what we get genetically, etc) v nuture (what we get if we're "lucky") debate - along with the creationism (with a predestination bent) v. evolution (adaptation / change over time) debate...

which can lead to thoughts about personal accountability and responsibility (as in the Wade case) - as well.

i am currently re-reading a book about animal abuse as it relates to domestic violence - and it got me thinking about how early traumatic events DO shape our lives...
even to our later choice of pets (or no)...

as you know, when i was a child some of the family pets were horribly abused and some killed outright...

and today i don't choose to have pets - even whilst loving animals (generally speaking) from afar...

and enjoying my bird vistors immensely.

as far as reaching out for "more enlightened levels of consciousness" - I have done that and continue to do that...

and i hope you and others - through whatever mechanism "works" for you - continue to do so as well!

thank you for the book reference. the title is indeed interesting...
